Scène magazine

Published as a prologue or companion piece to the Ontario Scene cultural festival staged by the National Arts Centre (NAC) in the spring of 2014, this 16-page bilingual tabloid was a happy collaboration between the NAC, guerilla magazine, and two other Ottawa arts media entities: Apt613 and herd magazine. I served as executive editor, pulling together features about many of the artists and performers involved in the month-long festival.

Kitchissippi Times

For all of 2011 and a little bit of 2012, I served as managing editor of this popular weekly paper that covers most of north-west Ottawa. At the time, the paper’s editorial mission was to report almost exclusively on the grassroots: the people and the neighbourhoods within the publication’s distribution zone.

The New Caymanian weekly

Almost right out of grad school, I began as an all-sections reporter at this tiny paper that was once an important part of the media landscape on Grand Cayman. It was the classic cub journalist experience for me but I learned a ton and was “promoted” to associate editor by the time I decided to return to Toronto in the summer of 1994. As a parting gesture, I scooped the entire island by getting the photo shown at left on the cover of our special royal visit edition. The Queen and Prince had come ashore to do some tours and to knight Sir Vassel Johnson, the politician who led the reforms whereby Cayman became an offshore tax haven. After much persistence, I gained access to a nearby rooftop and used a long lens to capture the sword-on-shoulder moment. Oddly, none of the shooters in the official photo pits had a good angle or opportunity to get this same shot.
